housing 3Many migrant farmworkers in North Carolina live in labor camps on the property of the farmer or crewleader for whom they work.  Many seasonal farmworkers are also provided a trailer or sharecropper house by the farmer for whom they work.  Even if growers or crewleaders do not own the housing, they often arrange for it or rent it for the crew.

North Carolina law is quite clear that if you are living in employer-controlled housing you have the right to receive visitors of your own choosing.  An employer cannot prohibit the visits from migrant health or migrant education providers, churches,  Legal Aid or any other group or person you wish to receive.

Under the law, the employer has a landlord relationship to tenants in the housing, and like other landlords, he cannot prevent you from receiving the visitors of your choice.
